Made In Space Expands Via Luxembourg Into Europe To Serve Worldwide Community Of Customers

LUXEMBOURG CITY, LUXEMBOURG September 27, 2018 — Made In Space, Inc. (MIS) to open a new facility in Luxembourg which will enable the company to more easily serve its European customers. MIS’s Luxembourg operations will focus on bringing low-cost robotic systems to the European market. Luxembourg was a strategically chosen location due to its proximity to both excellent robotics talent and successful European aerospace companies.

Building on its experience in space-proven electro-mechanical systems and its expertise in space-rated robotic solutions, MIS’s Luxembourg facility will develop a new low cost, modular robotic arm for space applications. Once this product is developed, it will be made available initially to European markets. Thereafter, this new system will be offered to a broader set of markets, both on Earth and in space.

The exponential rate of advancement in robotic technology is enabling new robotic solutions today which can change the way space operators and spacecraft makers approach their missions. MIS sees the development of sophisticated in-space robotics as being key to increased human presence in space. Though robot arms have flown to space for decades, MIS plans to change the paradigm of robotic space operations by offering, for the first time ever, a low cost, off the shelf robot arm available for any space application.

Jason Dunn, Founder & Director at MIS said that, “we see this technology as a key step to enabling a more sophisticated LEO economy over the next ten years. While we believe this product will reduce satellite makers’ barriers to greater capability on orbit, we also see our robot arms as being integral to constructing space gateways, building lunar habitats, and assisting in the in-space construction of future space stations. Combining Made In Space’s success on orbit with the strategic locale of Luxembourg positions us to develop the best possible product for our customers in that time frame.”

Development will occur in MIS facilities in Luxembourg, allowing the company to more effectively partner with European aerospace companies. Given the uniqueness of the centralized area in Europe, Luxembourg has access to talent from a variety of neighboring countries in the fields of aerospace technology and advanced robotics. Additionally, the aerospace workforce in Luxembourg is growing both in the industrial sector and in academia. The company plans to work with the University of Luxembourg in order to provide students the ability to study and research in-space robotics. During its first five years in operation in Luxembourg, MIS plans to add up to 50 new advanced technology jobs to the country’s workforce.

Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider, stated: “With Made In Space from the US, we welcome another foreign company which chose our country as a European hub for developing highly advanced technologies and capabilities like robot arm systems for both use on Earth and in Space to meet the new and growing demand for low cost, mission ready applications. The cooperation envisaged with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust of the University of Luxembourg as a key player of the local innovation ecosystem to advance research in the field of remotely operated robotic systems will provide Made In Space a promising starting position as a new actor of Luxembourg’s vibrant space economy.”
