SDA Completes Another Major Link 16 Testing Milestone with Successful Space to Ship Demonstration

The Space Development Agency (SDA) said on Aug. 7 that an SDA Tranche 0 satellite with Link 16 connected recently with an aircraft carrier. SDA was also able to transmit Link 16 messages from the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture Tranche 0 constellation to an aircraft parked on the carrier’s deck. These successful tests continue to demonstrate using Link 16 from space to other DoD assets.

The recent demonstration follows November 2023 testing that successfully demonstrated the first-ever transmission of a Link 16 signal from space using Redwire’s L-Band Link 16 Helical Antenna technology.

The Link 16 waveform provides a tactical advantage for the warfighter by enabling the transmission of rapid and secure communications directly to the battlefield, speeding decision-making cycles.  This is a major milestone for the future development of tactical warfighter networks in space.
