Executive Management Team
Chief Engineer & Senior Technical Fellow
Steve Bailey is Chief Engineer and a Senior Technical Fellow Redwire. In this role, Steve brings significant experience, having worked on human and robotic explorations systems since 1983. He founded Deep Space Systems (DSS) in 2001 and successfully grew the business from one employee to more than 60 employees in mid-2020 before it was acquired by Redwire.
Steve started DSS as an engineering services business but branched from engineering services into providing spaceflight hardware for customers, including Lockheed Martin, Sierra Nevada, Northrop Grumman, and NASA.
Prior to DSS, Steve worked at the NASA Johnson Space Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, supporting multiple missions, including the Space Shuttle, Mars Pathfinder Project, and Mars Surveyor Program. Steve’s affinity for commercial space exploration led to a position as lander design lead for BlastOff! in 2000, a dot-com era startup for a commercial lunar lander.
Steve was the Spacecraft Systems Design Lead for the Mars Polar Lander and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. He has held technical leadership positions on a variety of human and robotic flight systems and advanced programs efforts.
Steve holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and is a recipient of NASA’s Silver Snoopy, the Astronaut’s award for human spaceflight achievements, for his work on the emergency and survival systems for the Orion Crew Vehicle.
